Baltimore Neighborhoods: Downtown, Barclay & Hamilton Hills

11-09-2011

November 9, 2011

Home buyers thinking of moving to Baltimore, Maryland, would do well to research the city's different neighborhoods to figure out where they can feel at home. While being near a workplace or school might be a major factor in the decision of where to move to, the local culture, attitude and aesthetic appearance of nearby homes and structures can have a major impact on what it is like to live somewhere. Because the decision to move typically means staying in a new home for at least several years, it's important to choose well.

Downtown Baltimore

The Downtown area of Baltimore contains several neighborhoods and is generally an affluent part of the city. Among its attractions is the first monument to George Washington, created in 1829. City Center, Inner Harbor, West Side and Camden Yards are all part of the Downtown region. These areas generally have a mix of condominums, rowhomes, historic houses and new construction, according to Live Baltimore, catering to prospective homeowners of different wants and needs.

City Center is a business and office hub, as well as the home of many historic buildings. The Inner Harbor area holds the National Aquarium and Port Discovery Children's Museum, hotels, meeting spaces, and venues for shopping, dining and entertainment.

The Camden Yards area may be preferred by sports fans, hosting the city's Orioles and Ravens, as well as possessing superior access to transportation, particularly to the nation's capital. The West Side, on the other hand, has benefited from significant investments to fund major development projects.

Barclay and Hamilton Hills

Like those of any city, Baltimore's neighborhoods vary considerably. Barclay has a more close-knit culture, whose residents have worked with community organizations to revitalize the area's housing and maintain green spaces and gardens for themselves according to Live Baltimore.

The neighborhood has seen growth as new construction joins many rowhomes and historic houses. In contrast, the Hamilton Hills area has a more suburban appearance and culture, with relatively large yards and porches and a level of quiet beyond other neighborhoods. It remains part of the city, however, so restaurants, shopping, grocery stores and other destinations are still in walking distance. The area also hosts a number of community events and festivals due to its active neighborhood organization.
